Seducing Mr Knightly (E–pub/Kindle) ↠ Maya Rodale
Hing the writing style is lacking It s rough and unpolished and I hope a lot of that can be xplained by the fact that this is an ARC an unedited proof and that the real novel when it hits shelves will be much better The writing seems rather choppy at times relying too much on sentence fragments rather than actual sentences to convey Sinner's Heart emotion and urgency That works but when done sparingly If it s done onvery page it loses ffect The same goes for the techniue of capitalizing certain words Good Girl Good Writing Girl A Look There are several phrases like that that are capitalized throughout the book Again that techniue works like when the author refers to Old Annabelle and New Annabelle but only when done sparingly Similarly there are certain phrases and words that are repeated over and over On the same page There s no xcuse for that It makes the writing feel lazy and puts the author s power over language in uestion as readers wonder Doesn t she know any other way to say that Seriously if I have to read plant a facer one time I m going to punch someone in the nose Which is an alternative way of saying plant a facer Alternative phrasing is a good thingAlso the phrases used throughout the book are rather trite They re standard Cheesy Romance Novel fare You Spirit of the Wolf expect those words and phrases to pop up in romance novels It s the truly good romance novels where the same ideas arexpressed in new inventive metaphors and phrasing Also Annabelle refers to her vagina and clitoris as there Like she s freaking Bella Swann from Twilight Ugh As far as the sex scenes go this is usually of interest to romance readers who are often appalled to learn that a romance novel has not one intimate scene beyond a kiss there is one There is one full length sex scene that is rather short and to the point down to business as it were predictable and no pretty moving language and a couple allusions to love scenes While reading that particular scene I couldn t help but think back on a phrase my writing teacher in college would often A Vineyard Christmas employ Show don t tell I often felt that Rodale relied too much on tell and not nearlynough on showAnother concern was the dialogue The characters repeat Een Bijzondere Vorm Van Osteosclerose each other s names too often When Knightly converses with Annabelle it s not unusual thatvery sentence that leaves his mouth nds in her name It makes the dialogue feel stilted clumsy and unrealistic Because who talks like thatAnother minor peeve of mine freuent use of xclamation points It makes the writing feel juvenile and overly sentimental sometimes ven melodramatic Exclamation points should be used sparinglyFrom a technical standpoint I loved the use of the little xcerpts from various London newspapers at the start of Hot Shot (North Ridge Book 3) each chapter as a framing device but on the first read it was confusing This is partly my fault because this is the first Rodale I vever read But on the second read I Math Basics 6 enjoyed the little blurbs a lot I d suggest though that when the blurb is from Annabelle s column to replace Dear Annabelle with Dear Annabelle s Advice Column or something of that nature The letters that Annabelle gets also start with Dear Annabelle and to a new reader reading the first time it gets confusing in terms of figuring out just whose voice is framing the start of the new chapter Annabelle s or a readers This is a minor change that would greatly clarify thingsBut they really are adorable little blurbsDear Annabelle We the undersigned think the Nodcock does not deserve you Nevertheless we wish that he would come to his senses and love youPenelope from Piccadilly and two hundred additional signaturesThere are also some plot points in the novel that don t make sense or aren t as flattering as they seem to hope to be For one thing Derek has a theatre critic but his paper never publishes a single bad review of any of his mother s plays That might seem like a doting son but at the same time it s kind of irritating Especially when Derek is all about publishing anythingven if it makes people look bad if it can be supported This problem is Voyage to the Underworld (Star Wars Missions, exacerbated when he later announces that not one bad word should be printed about Lady Lydia The fact that his staff is angry with him helps illustrate that this is not acceptable but at the same time it s not the only time Derek hasmployed such censorship case in point his mother s reviews Another point that bothered me was that all of London seemed to be on Annabelle s side rooting for her and then telling her the Nodcock didn t deserve her and she should find someone better and basically championing her cause The First Ghost every step of the way because they had fallen in love with her through her column over the years And yet later she gets hate mail and the author makes it seem like there s a lot of it This is right after it s said that young maidens have taken to pinning pink roses to their dresses to support Annabelle and later Derek s own friends tell him that if he hurts Annabelle all of London will basically be clamoring for his head on a pike I kept thinking make up your mind Do they love her Or do they send her a ton of hate mail Have they turned on her completely Have only some And if only some had turned on Annabelle it would have been funny to learn of heated conversationsarguments in ballrooms across London over whether Annabelle was someone to sympathize with or disdain for her blunders view spoilerAnother point was that in the Dear Annabelle column that Derek wrote he said he wanted to spend a lifetime together That wasn t an outright marriage proposal it didn t seem and in fact the language seemed to mirror hisarly not uite proposal to Annabelle where he suggested she become his mistress And yet Annabelle interprets this column with its similar language to be a marriage proposal It would have been nice if the column was reworded slightly to include an xplicit mention of marriage just to differentiate it from the arlier proposition hide spoiler 35 375 ish stars So I had all these thoughts to share about this Maya Rodale book only to realize that I already shared most of these Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits!: 4 Keys to Unlock Your Business Potential exact same thoughts while reviewing two other Maya Rodale books While my opinion of some authors work varies rather wildly from one book to the next depending on plot theme tonetc it seems I have a surprisingly consistent opinion on what I love about Maya Rodale and what I don t Maya Rodale s writing style is for lack of a better adjective Tessa Dare ish witty vibrant minently ngaging and at times about as authentically historical as an Humanism episode of Sex in the City Anachronisms tend not to bother me as much as they do many of my fellow HR addicts but if you re someone who s irked by modern speech and behavior in your alleged historicals consider yourself warned In addition to her infectiously sparkly writing style I absolutely love Rodale s heroines All three of the Rodale heroines I ve spent time with so far while possessing very different personalities are among the most relatable and genuinely likable I ve come across And suffice it to say I m not a reader who immediately loves orven likes all of the heroines with whom I come into contactfar from it in fact Alas I can t heap the same praise on Rodale s heroes I did Smokin' Hot end up mostly adoring ditzy yet sneakilyndearing Jack who we met in the loved it so much than I xpected to anthology At the Duke s Wedding remained indifferent to the hero in Three Schemes and a Scandal and have to sadly report that I outright disliked the titular Mr Knightly of this novel Look I know that my fondness for sadly report that I outright disliked the titular Mr Knightly of this novel Look I know that my fondness for adorkable heroes is unpopular to the point where writers rarely create one but ven by today s usual domineering alpha standards Knightly is just too much of a jerk for too much of the novel As others have astutely pointed out he
#Seems Utterly Indifferent To Our #utterly indifferent to our funny touchingly Lasombra eager heroine for so long that I found myself desperately hoping for a twist in which Annabelle decided this guy simply wasn t worth seducing and instead decided to find a good man who adored her as much as she deserved Knightly s inevitable oh wait yeah I guess I ve actually loved her all along despite pretty much neverver showing it turnaround felt a bit forced to me and ualified as too little too late My other complaint This was a 384 page novel that felt a full 100 pages longer than necessary Granted I often feel that way so maybe I m just an uncommonly impatient reader whose opinions on a novel s length should be taken with a few zillion grains of salt But for me the plot dragged the themes became tiresomely repetitive and the witty brisk and cheery pace of the first third gave way to slower this AGAIN meandering later on Overall this is an njoyable book that I m not sorry I read but due to my really She wants HIM view of the hero I found it a fairly unromantic romance Recommended for its wit and lovable heroine but if you re hoping to fall in love with the hero I d advise looking lsewhere. Y writer But suddenly she's xuisite and he can't get Annabelle out of his mind She must be pursuing someone but who For some inexplicable reason the thought of her with another man makes Knightly insanely jealous. ,

Sure series If you ve read the others you already know about or don t care about Rodale s handling of the Collision Course: Endless Growth on a Finite Planet era and the fantastical setup of the newspaper You also know about Annabelle and Knightly because that s been going on from the start I wasn txactly looking forward to the resolution but I finally took the time to track the book down and give it a shot Sadly Because pretty much any story I could come up with in my head would have been betterI had a tough time with Annabelle as I don t have a lot of sympathy for doormats It s one thing to face desperate circumstances or to fight long odds but Annabelle is just coasting along with an awful brother and his wife working hard to please the unpleasable Since she has a paying job at the newspaper you have to think she could 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1));
