The Death of Wendell Mackey Grabs Attention From The your attention from the page The author uses excellent descriptive prose to you into the dark and brutal world of the main character Wendell Mackey The author does a great job eeping the reader guessing as to what is real and what is only part of Wendell s delusions You feel Wendell s torment as he transforms into something horrifying There are parts within the story that get bogged down and some of the flashbacks are hard to follow However overall the story is fascinating and will Les Innocents keep you guessing until the very end Wendell Mackey is no longer a man but what is he He is in the process of a transformation but what exactly is he becoming Not even Wendellnows for sure The Death of Wendell Mackey begins three days into the main character s escape from an institution where he had been held against his will in order to become a test subject for experiments of a medical nature The author immediately whisks the reader into Wendell s mindset and the suspense of the story begins to buildThe strongest aspect of this engrossing story hinges upon C T Westing s ability to capture descriptive detail The scenes are rendered in a cinematic style The author leaves no stone unturned as he painstakingly draws the reader in Wendell s dark and confusing world Plus the beautiful cover art complements the plot well The reader gets a glimpse into Wendell s past as he hides out in his mother s old apartment Flashbacks reveal how he was tricked into undergoing the experiments that are now causing his skin to peel off along with his toes and teeth The fascinating surface story invites the reader to dig into deeper implications such as the nature of man and the role of science in modern lifeThe novel s structure may strike some readers as difficult to read not because of the writing which is very strong and engaging but because of the overly long chapters Even with the streamlined nature of eBooks readers often still find themselves hoping for manageable chapter breaks Another issue in the novel that broke the flow of the narrative centers on paragraphs that often run the length of one and sometimes nearly two full screens on an iPadThe ending might possibly leave some readers wanting or it could strike other readers as the perfect fit The Death of Wendell Mackey is definitely good because every reader will definitely find their own backgrounds and beliefs influencing how they interpret the story All in all Wendell Mackey is a strongly drawn character the reader will feel connected to as they get to I Was A Stranger know him and all that has happened in his life Scenes where he recalls details about his less than admirable mother certainly shed light on his character The authoreeps the narrative moving along but it does not do the book justice to give too much of the plot away Just now the story unfolds in a mesmerizing manner and Wendell s mysterious transformation makes the story hard to put downA complimentary copy was provided by the author for this reviewJeriWBcom 40 Stars Really Liked It To me this was not so much a thriller as a horror story Beautifully written in striking descriptive prose we follow the up and down. THINKS BACK TO THE BRUTAL MUREDR
back to the brutal muredr his father how the culprit was never found and how much his mother changed after thatEventually he ventures out discovering an even horrifying new dimension to himselfWhere will it end When will the excruciating pain and the hallucinations end Will they find him and reclaim their experiment Should he end it allAn elderly nun living opposite takes pity on Wendell sensing his torment and offering a sympathetic ear As a reader I ept willing Wendell to talk to Sister Agatha and share what had happened to him however Wendell is reluctant he The Lives of Stay-at-Home Fathers: Masculinity, Carework and Fatherhood in the United States knows what he has to say is too unbelievableThe story rushes on to a gripping climax with an unexpected twistAs a reader I enjoyed the story on many levels and there was so much wisdom expressed by sister Agatha during her conversations with Wendell themes which I think will chime with many Another theme of the The Death of Wendell Mackey is that one should never try and change or control someone else especially a child They say parents only do what is best for you and this book uite rightly asserts that they do what is best for themA very clever read that really did make me think I highly recommend it Wendell Mackey has just escaped from a shadowy building where doctors experiment on people But now that he s free Wendell s nightmare is only just beginning for he is changing into a monsterI was really puzzled by this book At the end I still wasn t clear exactly what was and had happened to Wendell Had he been changed by experimentation Was he ailler or just deranged There is a large element of flashback Wendell regularly drops into the past from the present particularly when remembering his Difficult Childhood And His Negligible Relationship With His Mother He childhood and his negligible relationship with his mother He believes he s changing into a monster a new form of human Again I still can t uite decide whether this was really happeningThe writing style is uite interesting slightly offbeat However I struggled to take to the characters There s Wendell himself who initially works for the shadowy institute then starts to partake in the experimentation by swallowing pills left in his locker by the doctors I couldn t accept this would many if any people do the same It wasn t a reasonable premise in my opinionThe other relatively few characters are also odd Drake one of his neighbors is particularly unpleasant and the pair engage in some strange meetings Sister Agatha another neighbor and elderly nun takes pity on him for some reason and provides his salvation I couldn t see why she would other than a sense of caring for a fellow human even one as apparently deranged as Wendell Perhaps she saw something I couldn tAt approaching 85000 words it s not the longest novel in the world but the nine chapters one per day means long periods between a natural break and sometimes extensive narrative which is often than not Wendell internalizing and examining his past present and future another element I struggled with Dialogue is often than not Wendell internalizing and examining his past present and future another element I struggled with Dialogue in short supply Therefore the story didn t exactly skip alongNot a bad read but not without its challengesoriginally reviewed for Books and Pals blog May have received free review copy. O may be the last ray of hope in his brutal and dark lifeWhat follows is a journey into fanaticism deception and violence The horrors of science run amok blend with the surreal and nightmarish creating a story that forces you to uestion reality and the foundations of human nature The Death of Wendell Mackey will stay with you long after the story en. S of Wendell s life in the present and through and inner musings In many ways it reminded me of the film The Fly although that central character ind new what he was doing whereas Wendell had no say in the way his life had irrevocably changed There is little interaction and dialogue with other characters once Wendell escapes which makes the novel at times too ponderous and inward looking I also think the author didn t make the most of Wendell s break for freedom and for me the ending was a little disappointing a recommended read due to the stunning prose Wendell has escaped The novel hits the ground running and the reader is uickly drawn in to Wendell s world What is happening to him What is he becoming Why him His grip on reality is fragile as he struggles against an internal enemy and many imagined as well as real external enemies not least the past It is a fast paced thriller with a very interesting theme Many horrific things will happen to us as we go through life these things may turn us into monsters but if we can find someone to be honest with someone who listens and who is not judgemental then we can hold back the monster and find the true us Wendell s mother is very Gone: The Disappearance of Claudia Lawrence and Her Father's Desperate Search for the Truth keen for him to take up a new job at the out of the way building on the old industrial estate The anonymous building is at the end of an afterthought road which bends around meaning that the building is not easily seen Wendell is a uiet insecureind of guy who tends to go with the flow His colleague Laughlin is a drunken thug his other colleague Connor is a part time grad student dead set on ingratiating himself to the doctors who work at the medical lab which operates in this building One of his first jobs is 1,000 Awesome Writing Prompts keeping some protesters who have gathered outside the building as well as the news crews at bay One of the protesters tells Wendell They make poison All those lab coats those so called experts You think they dnow better Despite the warning and the imploring face of the young protester Wendell is unfazed it s a pay cheue after all and he can see nothing untoward A while later one of the doctors approach Wendell with a proposition would he like to take some pills something like vitamins which can really improve his health Being the obliging chap he is Wendell agrees and of course the extra cash will allow him to fulfil a dream of moving away from the city one day Far from feeling better he is sucked into a downward spiral Soon events escalate and it is than pills it s anaesthetics gas operations and permanent incarceration in a cell like ward Chained to a bed dowsed in sedatives he loses track of time and of reality but the uestion he never forgets is Why me Wendell nows he must escape he is part of an awful experiment and the screams from the floor below for tell his own fate After experiment and the screams from the floor below for tell his own fate After daring escape he finds himself hiding out at his dead mother s apartment Surely they will come for him eventually Suddenly he is confronted full on by the hideous transformation which he is physically undergoing Starving hungry yet terrified to be seen the apartment is his new prison where the controlling belittling mean spirited ghost of his mother continue. Building planted in him a seed that is beginning to grow and when they come to find him Wendell isn't sure what will be there to greet themPursued by his former captors threatened by the dregs of a city imploding from within watching his body melt into something monstrous Wendell sees little chance of escape until he meets one person an old woman wh. ,
