[E–pub/Kindle] Secrets of an Accidental Duchess BY Jennifer Haymore
Of Gaelen Foley s writing or Vivienne Leigh I thought the rating for this was going to be so much higher I was so into it I loved the affair between Max and Olivia I loved how she was different from her family and had a secret illness that ept her apart I loved Max and his devotion to Olivia They had a love at first sight romance that actually worked for me and developed deeper with timeBut And this is a big butthe ending was horrible Not that there wasn t an HEA but the final climax was so crazy and unrealistic and unfinished I feel like this one had too much plot going and probably should have been streamlined a bit The villain got too much page time He was so awful and then it all just Computational Molecular Biology: An Algorithmic Approach (Computational Molecular Biology) kind of ended and the fallout from the final scenes were just glossed overI hate when big things happen and younow there will be fallout and it isn t explained Everyone is just seen down the road happy without any explanations of how they got there It s a shame really because even with the drama earlier in the book and the improbable amount of private time Max and Olivia got together I was into it Hay s sex scenes are good her leads were likable and the romance was charged and sweet But then things got crazy with the villain and the romance got buried in plot and I finished the story bummed that I wouldn t have any answers Such a bummer since this had so many ingredients I like The follow up to Confessions of an Improper Bride Jennifer Hay once again unites us with the Donovan sisters from book one Olivia is unknowingly caught up in a vicious wager between the wild young and rather reckless soon to be duke Max WakefieldIt s a rather ungentlemanly wager that both he and the odious Lord Fenwicke become involved in And this is only the start of the book Fenwicke is a bad seed that much is certain It s not a spoiler to say just how bad he can get before the end of the storyThis is why the author creates such a good story Her characters are fully realised and we feel like we now each one as they take their part in the bookWhat slightly stops this from being a five star read is the length of the story It could have been trimmed by 50 pages or so and been utterly amazing But as it stands it is a worthy successor to the first and arguably better bookAs with most HR s there s love there s confusion there s debts to be paid and waived and somewhere along the line something deeper and meaningful This is why the author is one of the best HR writers out there in my view Both books in the series so far have been solid and entertaining but also have the capacity to surprise this book certainly does thatAs with the first book the descriptive narrative is excellent Main Bad Guy truly is a horrendous creation by Miss Hay Does it matter that he seems to have no redeeming ualities No We want him to be bad because he brings colour to the story that would otherwise be a will they or won t they get together romance He brings a dangerous angle to the story and it is not for certain that Olivia will live to see her sister from book one again or to survive this actual taleThoroughly enjoyable from start to finish I will now be looking up the next in the series 45 stars This was a great series It swept away with "Emotion That Jumps Out Of The Pages I T "that jumps out of the pages I couldn t this one down The characters were all interesting It has interesting twists I didn t expect The romances described in the book are wonderful and Max and Olivia are a perfectly matched pairThanks to the publishers and the teams at Net Galley for making this advance copy available to me for review 45 StarsThe first third to half of this book was utterly amazing with an engrossing and over the top romantic love story If the middle and last part of the book were like this as well I would have definitely given this one 5 stars and However the middle and later parts of the book were consumed with the villain and some less than believable idnapping and murder plots Which was really disappointing because the main characters and romance were so fantastic Still since I loved the first part so much I m giving this one 45 stars and whole heartedly recommending it to romance fansMax and Olivia were so very sweet together they had a romance that was free from all the petty suabbles and misunderstandings we see so often It did seem jarring that they hopped into bed so uickly just because Max was so respectful and it seemed out of character for Olivia too However I do see how this was necessary to the overall plot especially the villians motives etcI really love the supporting cast of this book Both Jonathan and Serena Meg were back in a big way Jonathan was truly adorable as the overprotective brother in law another reason why the aforementioned bed hopping didn t work for me And I m thrilled Captain Langley was back as well I absolutely cannot wait for his story next I am so happy with the direction his story is headed in and I have to add I new itThe romance between these two leads is just the sort of sweet all consuming love that I love to read about The only drawback is that not enough time was focused on the romance and too much attention was on the villainbook sent by publisher in exchange for honest reviewreviewed for. Love with this innocent beauty Nor could he have guessed that a dangerously unpredictable rival would set out to destroy them both Now Max must beat a Madman at his own twisted game or forever lose the only woman to have ever won his hear. ,
Olivia Donovan has resigned herself to a life without love and a husband uite depressing when you think about it But after suffering an illness that has weakened her constitution and has relapses She feels her place will be with one of her sisters when they are married and have children She can help and find fulfillment in that aspect of her life Fate intervenes and she meets Max Buchanan As a reader it is not hard to like Max He shows Olivia that there is to life and she can do anything she wants The secrecy of her health was unnecessary but later it does give Max a better picture on why her family protects her so muchThere is a definite villain in this story that is an awful awful character His storyline is a strong secondary story along with his poor wifeSecrets of an Accidental Duchess started off as a stronger story than book one Confessions of an Improper Bride But uickly fizzled and in my opinion is a forgettable book once read This reader is chalking it up to finding an author that doesn t work for me And I will not continue with this series I recommend this book only to fans of the series This ARC was provided to me through NetGalley If she did not succumb to my charms Halsley then rest assured there s no way in hell she ll succumb to yours Fenwicke s voice was mild but the cords in his neck bulged above his cravat Max shook his head unable to prevent a sneer from forming on his lips You re wrong Fenwicke Fenwicke s brows rose his eyes glinted and a sly expression came over his face He leaned forward greedily licking his lips Would you care to place a wager on thatTwo men rivals for yearsHe thought she should be honored by his indecent proposal He was just after the chaseOne woman who wasn t looking to get involvedShe was bent on never marrying nor trifling with men She had come to the conclusion marriage just wasn t in the cards and she d long ago given up on that dreamOne small wager That would lead to nothing but TROUBLE Will men never learn Have your eyes ever connected with those of another individual s across a crowded room and you became instantly aware of them Like some magnetic force caught you in it s grip and you just couldn t look away That is how it happened with Olivia and Max No introductions were made No words were exchanged but each was instantly made aware of the other and would not soon forget Olivia had been afflicted with Malaria many years ago While nobody could contract the disease from her it had driven many potential suitors away She d decided to give up any thoughts of marrying and decided to be satisfied with being the doting spinster aunt to her sisters children She is smart sweet strong willed and "THE TYPE TO TELL IT LIKE "type to tell it like is in a gentle fashion She may have a life threatening illness but "She Doesn T Let "doesn t let eep her down and attempts to live her life as normally as she canMax had a reputation for being a unrepentant rake and had decided never to marry His father had a temper that Max had seen first hand He himself occasionally felt a fury building up inside himself and feared it would one day be unleashed He decided long ago he would never subject another individual to it especially a wife Fenwicke was a married man who thought himself above the rules of society Being a Maruis with the possibility of one day becoming a Duke he did as he pleased This time however he was about to take that attitude a bit too farWhen Max and Olivia Max finally met he soon forgot all the wager he d made with Fenwicke as he did with so many of their other wagers The problem was Fenwicke wasn t the type to forget or for that matter forgive Max would soon regret ever having made that wagerThis was a slightly dark story with a sinister villain The characters were easy to empathize with and like that is with the exception of one character namely Fenwicke There were many tense moments and a lot of drama The relationship between Max and Olivia was fun to watch as it grew and shifted into something neither expected Plus the strong relationship among the sisters was nice to see I must confess I ve grown pretty fond of Captain Langley so I m glad that it looks like he ll finally have his happily ever after in the next bookWhere did the book get it s name I believe from this slightly spoiler filled passage She was going to be a duchess But that was simply an accidental side effect of what she was truly going to become of what she truly wanted to be Max s wife I gave this one 4 out 5 roses On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale this one gets a STEAM rating Too hot for a fan but you still have a handle on things You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public People may inuire as to why you looked flustered and flushedOrder of series Pleasures of A Tempted Lady comes out August 1stTo read of my reviews please visit my blog at wwwseducedbyabookcom You can also read this on Anachronist s blog This is the first time I ve heard of Jennifer Hay and had I nown what to expect I most likely would have passed the opportunity to read her work This isn t going to be a positive reviewThe title is misleading There really weren t that many secrets this accidental duchess had and the ones there were were revealed ui. With her pale hair and slim figure Olivia Donovan looks as fragile as fine china and has been treated as such by her sisters ever since a childhood bout with malaria But beneath her delicate facade Olivia guards a bold independent spirit Te uickly and without in a timely fashion His secrets tooThere really should be a series warning for all unsuspecting readers Not that I was one of them I new I was jumping in in the middle of a series but that wasn t the problem The problem was the extensive character gallery I was expected to familiarise myself with immediately To this moment I wouldn t be able to name and place all the important side characters I barely remember the main characters but that has to do with the poor characterisations or lack thereof More about that laterFrom the very start I realised that Hay s writing style wasn t for me I happen to think there s a difference between detailed and florid one of which is good and the other one isn t I thought she crossed that line although it did get slightly better when action overtook the momentSpeaking of things that were better than expected the sex scenes were a positive surprise Despite the fact that the her happiness was dependent on his orgasm there was nothing too awkward or unintentionally hilarious I found these scenes uite titillating which is a first in a professionally published work for a while Having said that I still think there was passion between Max and his rival Fenwicke than there ever was between Max and Olivia That s because of the characterisations Max and Olivia both felt so flat and uninteresting in comparison that over the top evil Fenwicke appeared to the only three dimensional character in the book I could have handled the brutality and the abuse described had it been properly addressed and not been reduced to a mere plot device Fenwicke was nothing than a ploy to create drama and angst where none was needed as the relationship between Max and Olivia had its existing inner tensions What s worse neither Fenwicke or his victims were addressed with enough care or attention but they were uickly dismissed as their part in the storyline expired I could dwell on the idiocy of the two main characters exhibited throughout and especially towards the end of this book but suffice to say that there s a reason why I shelved this book under the too stupid to live category I m not just talking about the contradiction between a gentleman willing to seduce a virgin but reluctant to fight dirty when being attacked by a mob I m talking about the lack of pure survival instinct He d rather beat up a man in his weakened state than run to save her life I m aware that my generation nor that the one of my parents or their parents invented sex but to read about sisters one of which is an unmarried virgin talk about contraception sounded too modern to fit the time to me There was also another instance when Olivia was asking Max to give her space that felt out of place in this historical setting Also as detail orientated as the author is I was surprised how easily Olivia could wolf down her meal despite the injury to her throat I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley This the second book int he Donovan Sisters series I still think the title is a bit misleading however the story was nice and I enjoyed it very much
